Bach's 'John Passion' - Apollo Ensemble

Bach's 'John Passion' - Apollo Ensemble
Together with Bach's St. Matthew Passion, St. John's Passion is one of the most beloved passions ever. One of the secrets of the play lies with the evangelist John himself. In his version of Jesus' Passion, the writer is more 'to the point' than the other evangelists. Bach makes clever use of this, because in St John's Passion there is speed and you hear more drama. This is reinforced by the choir's considerable contribution, as in the poignant opening choir 'Herr, unser Herrscher'. And of course there are beautiful arias like 'Zerfließe, mein Herze' and 'Ergwäge'. The Apollo Ensemble provides an impressive experience in passionate times.

Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) and Hayo Boerema (organ) - Improvisation concert

Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) and Hayo Boerema (organ) - Improvisation concert
You know what's so great about improvisation? The music originates on the spot. Without sheet music in front of them, trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and organist Hayo Boerema take you into the moment. It is an adventurous tour, the outcome of which is undecided. How's that? Hayo says: "Where we are on aces are those moments when we get inspired. That gives an atmosphere where everything that happens is exciting!"

Izhar Elias (guitar) and Fernando Cordas (guitar) - Beethoven and Concierto de Aranjuez

Izhar Elias (guitar) and Fernando Cordas (guitar) - Beethoven and Concierto de Aranjuez
The 'Adagio' from Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez became perhaps the most famous guitar work of all time. With the first sounds of this melancholic melody you immediately imagine yourself in the warm Spain. Around this legendary 'Adagio' guitarists Izhar Elias and Fernando Cordas play a temperamental Spanish programme with even a trip to Beethoven. Even in the Vienna of the young Beethoven the guitar was a hip instrument. Izhar and Fernando celebrate Beethoven's 250th year of birth with a large collection of special guitars

Judith Steenbrink (violin) and Tineke Steenbrink (harpsichord) - Bach's Violin Sonatas

Judith Steenbrink (violin) and Tineke Steenbrink (harpsichord) - Bach's Violin Sonatas
Bach wouldn't be Bach if he didn't also make the violin sonata something special. Until then the violinist stole the show in such pieces. The harpsichord player didn't have much more to do than working out a bass line. In his own violin sonatas Bach gives the harpsichord its own part. This makes violin and harpsichord equivalent to each other. Music that is in more than good hands with the twin sisters Steenbrink. As seasoned Bach specialists of the Holland Baroque ensemble, Judith and Tineke will take you on a spectacular journey through Bach's breakneck violin sonatas
