125 years Hendrik Andriessen

In 2017 it was 125 years ago that the Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen was born. Andriessen turned out to be one of the most important innovators of Dutch organ music. In season 2017-2018, the Edesche Concertzaal will focus on this eminent Dutch composer and organist. Organist Jetty Podt and soprano Francine van der Heijden literally put his music at the centre of this concert with music from French Romanticism

Jetty Podt

Jetty Podt has her place as city organist of the city of Nijmegen and as church organist on the beautiful König organ of the Stevens Church. On this instrument Jetty Podt made several praised CD recordings with works by Maurice Duruflé, Jan Welmers and Franz Liszt. Organ concerts took her outside the Netherlands to Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Brazil and the United States. She likes to put together special programmes around the organ in combination with literature and poetry such as the miracle play Mariken van Nieumeghen.

Francine van der Heijden about singing with the organ:
"The tones are better left lying down. You can feel the tones around you. And an organ has so many colours. That's the big difference with a piano. Each piece can change the palette a little. I like that very much. You feel like you have a tapestry of sound underneath you."
(Read the interview with Francine van der Heijden)

Francine van der Heijden

Powerful, agile and romantic. This is how the press describes the warm voice of soprano Francine van der Heijden. On stage she switches just as easily between opera and song, between baroque and romance. Francine has worked with conductors such as Ton Koopman, Frans Brüggen, John Nelson and Christian Zacharias. Her CD of songs by Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny received international acclaim. In the Edesche Concert Hall she sings music by another female composer: Lili Boulanger

Like a gentle slumber after a beautiful dream - this is how the songs and organ pieces of this concert sound. Organist Jetty Podt and soprano Francine van der Heijden take you on a journey through the warm and sensual sounds of French Romanticism. Vocal gems such as the song 'Après un rêve' and the 'Pie Jesu', both by Fauré, are juxtaposed with organ classics such as César Franck's 'Prélude, fugue et variation' and 'Litanies' by Jehan Alain. This music culminates in one of the best-known pieces by the Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen: 'Magna res est amor'.
