Schumann left his three string quartets on. 41 as a present for his wife Clara on her birthday. Inspired by the string quartets of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, it only took him two weeks to put these three masterpieces on paper. And another well-known name is attached to these string quartets: Schumann dedicated them to his friend Felix Mendelssohn.

Composer Willem Wander van Nieuwkerk himself talks about his 'Super Suite': 'Each movement is based on, or fantasized 'about', an old religious and liturgical melody (hence 'super'): a Gregorian hymn (or its Protestant counterpart, such as Luther who wrought beautifully) or an original early Protestant church song'

Between 1892 and 1895 Dvorák lived and worked in America. Here he wrote his 'Twelfth String Quartet', which got the nickname 'American'. Dvorák felt very much at home there and that probably explains the optimistic character of the music. As in the Czech Republic, the composer incorporated the folk music of the locals in his piece. Even the singing of the local birds allegedly got a place in the third part, the Scherzo
