D'un soir triste
Arosa Trio
Composer Lili Boulanger has not been more than a promise. She died just 24 years young from the effects of Crohn's disease. Yet in her short life she wrote a small but impressive oeuvre. Her compositions made a crushing impression on Fauré and her innovations influenced composers such as Arthur Honegger. What would have become of Lili if she had lived longer...
Pianotrio in d, op. 11
Arosa Trio
  • I. Allegro molto vivace
  • II. Andante espressivo
  • III. Lied. Allegretto
  • IV. Finale. Allegretto moderato
Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix's older sister, was best allowed to compose as long as she published it under her brother's name. That had to go wrong sometime. When Queen Victoria wanted to sing the song 'Italien' to Felix Mendelssohn, who was visiting Buckingham Palace, he had to confess that not he, but his sister Fanny had composed the English queen's favourite song.

Robert and Clara Schumann were not only a love couple, they were also a composing couple. They regularly refer to each other's music in their pieces. Moreover, around 1845 they made a thorough study of Bach's music, which also left deep traces in their music. Captivated at home by pregnancy in 1846, Clara composed her Piano Trio in g. Besides references to Schumann's music, the Piano Trio is also full of contrapuntal discoveries à la Bach.
