Pergolesi's Stabat Mater

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi wrote perhaps the most famous Stabat Mater in Western music history. Who doesn't know the bittersweet opening part in which soprano and alto are constantly circling around each other. Like Mary's crying on your shoulder. At least as poignant were the circumstances under which Pergolesi composed it: the 26-year-old composer wrote his Stabat Mater a few months before he died of tuberculosis. The work was surrounded by myths, but also became incredibly popular. It even entered the history books as the most printed composition of the eighteenth century

Alessandro Scarlatti Stabat Mater

The 63-Scarlatti was the grand old man of the Italian opera at the time he composed his 'Stabat Mater', he wrote no less than 115 of them. No wonder that his 'Stabat Mater' mainly zooms in on dramatic contrasts in the text. A special resemblance between the Stabat Maters of Pergolesi and Scarlatti is the sober instrumentation of two voices, two violins and basso continuo. This had everything to do with the poor client of both pieces: the Neapolitan Order of the Knight of the Virgin of Sorrows. During this concert you will hear both works in their original line-up.

Stabat Mater in the original line-up

Marjon Strijk (soprano), Gabriëlle Nijhuis (alto), Antoinette Lohmann (baroque violin), Pieter Affourtit (baroque violin), Diederik van Dijk (baroque cello) and Henk van Zonneveld (chest organ) perform the Stabat Maters by Scarlatti and Pergolesi in the original line-up. Intense intimacy at the highest level. Soprano Marjon Strijk belongs to the permanent soloist ensemble of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and is a member of the internationally renowned soloist ensemble Quinck. Henk van Zonneveld studied organ and harpsichord at the Utrecht Conservatory and is a continuo player in the tradition of such greats as Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt.

Marjon Strijk: "With both feet on the ground"
Soprano Marjon Strijk goes her own way. She didn't do a conservatory education, but started her working life in healthcare. Only later did singing become a serious career path. By now she is a much sought-after soloist. "Because of the nurse's compartment, I've always had both feet on the ground." (Read the interview with Marjon Strijk.)

Listen to Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in small line-up.

Pergolesi, who died young, wrote perhaps the most poignant 'Stabat Mater' ever. Few composers knew Maria's sorrow for expressing her son as intensely in music as Pergolesi. In the Edesche Concert Hall this masterpiece sounds together with the equally serene 'Stabat Mater' by Alessandro Scarlatti. Organist Henk van Zonneveld combines these vocal masterpieces with two organ chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach.
