Beethoven's latest piano sonatas

The dark side of Beethoven, Chopin and Ravel emerges as soon as artist in residence Anna Fedorova takes place behind the Bösendorfer Imperial 290. Pushing boundaries is of all times, but romantic composers already had a hand in it. Beethoven threw off the yoke of the classical piano sonata. No more limits or regulations, but free expression prevails. He composed his last three piano sonatas when he was almost deaf and was never able to listen to his masterpieces.

Chopins Ballads and Ravel's water nymphs

Chopin also left the classical forms behind when he composed his Four Ballads, one of the highlights of nineteenth-century piano literature. Chopin's free form led to all sorts of wild speculations about what the Ballades were about. Maurice Ravel was much more open about the sources of inspiration for his Gaspard de la Nuit. He based the piece on the collection of poems of the same name by Aloysius Bertrand. A water nymph, a gallows and a dwarf play an important role in this. Romance at its best. Although: "I wanted to make a caricature of Romanticism, but perhaps I went too far in doing so", according to the composer. Judge for yourself.

"You can really paint with music"
"I love mysterious, fairytale music. It is very fascinating to sketch with sound. You can really paint with music. All those little pictures with different characters and countries.
