Tango, romance and fiery passion - Johannes Möller and Laura Fraticelli - Acoustic guitar music

Schubert of the Guitar'

Johann Kapar Mertz wrote poetic pieces for two guitars. His music resembles Schubert's, that's why Mertz is also called the Schubert of the guitar. He also arranged many of Schubert's songs and piano music for guitar, which he also performed himself. That nothing of the original power of expression was lost, a contemporary described: 'Mertz' guitar playing is strong, full of schwung, feeling, precision and expression' Qualities that can also be heard in the three Argentine tango's. To this end Johannes Möller and Laura Fraticelli tie in with the origins of the genre. On the lecterns are a number of early guitar tangos from Piazzolla's immediate predecessors. With two compositions of their own, Johannes Möller and Laura Fraticelli draw the circle even wider and link up with Indian musical traditions with astonishing results.

"Compare it to how the old painters worked," says Johannes Müller. "One was good at animals and the other was good at landscapes and so they created together. It's the same with us: we compose parts separately from each other and some pieces we make together" Together with his wife Laura Fraticelli he travels around the world as a duo and soloist In 2013 Müller played as one of the main acts at the Calcutta International Classic Guitar Festival and won in 2010 the Guitar Foundation of America Competition.

Music from four corners of the globe rustling across twelve strings. In this surprising recital Johannes Möller and Laura Fraticelli play special works for two guitars. Forerunners of the Argentine tango and of a forgotten Utrecht composer. But also poetic music by Johann Kaspar Mertz: the Schubert of the guitar. Intimate romance combined with fiery passion of South America. Both worlds literally come together in Duo Fraticelli.
