Feldman's Vertical Thoughts works between the violin sonatas of Ravel and Prokofiev as a musically hushed zero point. In this 1963 piece, Feldman reduces melody, harmony and rhythm to a kind of musical vacuum in which time no longer seems to exist, only the moment.

Prokofiev began his First Violin Sonata, op. 80 in 1938. At that time, the Soviet Union was ravaged by the cultural purges under Joseph Stalin, and many of Prokofiev's friends and colleagues disappeared to the labor camps of the gulag. Their supposed fate Prokofiev expressed in passages in the first and last movements that he described as "the wind blowing over a cemetery."
