Vioolsonate nr. 1 (1898)
Severin von Eckardstein (piano) Sophie Jaffé (viool)
Ravel's Violin Sonata, published only long after his death, can rightly be taken as an impressionistic piece. Just as painters like Monet blur shapes and colors, Ravel takes the sharp edges off unambiguous measures and tones
Vertical Thoughts II
Severin von Eckardstein (piano) Sophie Jaffé (viool)
Feldman's Vertical Thoughts works between the violin sonatas of Ravel and Prokofiev as a musically hushed zero point. In this 1963 piece, Feldman reduces melody, harmony and rhythm to a kind of musical vacuum in which time no longer seems to exist, only the moment.
Vioolsonate nr. 1, op. 80
Severin von Eckardstein (piano) Sophie Jaffé (viool)
  • I. Andante assai
  • II. Allegro brusco
  • III. Andante
  • IV. Allegrissimo – Andante assai
Prokofiev began his First Violin Sonata, op. 80 in 1938. At that time, the Soviet Union was ravaged by the cultural purges under Joseph Stalin, and many of Prokofiev's friends and colleagues disappeared to the labor camps of the gulag. Their supposed fate Prokofiev expressed in passages in the first and last movements that he described as "the wind blowing over a cemetery."
PAUZE
Fantasie in C, D 934
Severin von Eckardstein (piano) Sophie Jaffé (viool)
  • I. Andante molto -
  • II. Allegro vivace -
  • III. Andantino -
  • IV. Allegro presto
Virtuosity is not something you immediately think of when you hear Schubert's lilting music. Nevertheless, this Fantasy is among Schubert's most technically demanding music that he composed. The Lied, however, is not entirely absent. In the middle of the piece, Schubert presents a number of variations on his song Sei mir gegrüsset
