Tchaikovsky's love for Mozart

Did you know that Tchaikovsky was a huge Mozart fan? "Of the great masters, Mozart is the one to whom I am most attracted; it has been so since the beginning and will always be so," Tchaikovsky wrote in his autobiography. No wonder you find nods to Mozart's music in many of his pieces, such as in the First String Quartet. In this quartet, the bombast characteristic of Tchaikovsky gives way to "neo-classical" lightness. This beautiful piece connects the Dudok Quartet with Mozart's last string quartet. Shostakovich's Third String Quartet, like Tchaikovsky's First, also begins as a lighthearted divertimento à la Mozart. But beware, nothing with Shostakovich is what it seems.

Poignant Shostakovich

Shostakovich wrote his poignant Third String Quartet (1946) immediately after World War II. As such, the piece sounds like Shostakovich's personal retrospective of the war years. The quartet begins in an almost upbeat mood, as if not yet aware of the impending doom. The quartet ends with a heartbreaking slow movement that evokes the image of a desolate landscape, where war has been.

Mozart's last string quartet

"The show must go on"; something similar must have been on Mozart's mind when he composed his last string quartet. Plagued by money worries, Mozart worked feverishly on his final set of three string quartets. He wrote them with Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, an excellent amateur cellist, in mind. Who knows, maybe a job at the Prussian court lay ahead for Mozart. It turned out to be vain hope, and Mozart eventually sold his quartets to a Viennese publisher. Despite the disappointment, it produced great music, showing Mozart at the height of his powers.

Dudok Quartet

The Dudok Quartet is one of the most important string quartets in the Netherlands. The ensemble is also making significant headway internationally. In addition to the 2018 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the quartet won prizes at the International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux and at the Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition in Weimar. In addition to its fabulous playing, the ensemble impresses with programs that go off the beaten path. "We show and hear that the music we play is neither old nor new, but always music of the present. Music that needs to be heard. Music that moves, disrupts and makes an indelible impression," the Dudok Quartet announces. This certainly happens with the beautiful string quartets of Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich!

The highly successful Dudok Quartet covers just about every corner of the string quartet. The quartet does so with verve and with a mission. The four musicians want nothing more than to show, see and feel that music touches! What better way to do that than with pieces in which composers committed their deepest feelings to paper? Enjoy three intimate quartets by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich; music with a surprisingly personal touch. "An intense listening experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat," wrote The Strad.
