Stabat Mater by Pergolesi - Marjon Strijk, Gabriëlle Nijhuis, Henk van Zonneveld and others - Early Music

Stabat Mater
Dives Sonis
The text of the 'Stabat Mater' describes the sorrow of the mother Mary for her crucified son Jesus. To emphasise the lamenting character of the music, Giovanni Felice Sances incorporated the so-called lamento motif into the bass line: a line that descends in minor intervals
Sonate voor cello en b.c. in d, op. 5, nr. 2
Dives Sonis
  • I. Andante
  • II. Presto
  • III. Adagio
  • IV. Allegro
The cello sonatas by the Italian composer Francesco Geminiani are still a well-kept secret, with good reason. What makes this sonata in d minor so special is the great expressiveness of the music. Unusually, Geminiani often crosses the cello part and the bass line of the accompanying parts
Filiae Maestae Jerusalem, RV 638
Dives Sonis
  • I. Adagio (Recitativo)
  • II. Largo (Aria)
  • III. Adagio (Recitativo)
How we would have liked
Koraalvoorspel, BWV 617, 'Herr Gott, nun schleuß den Himmel auf'
Henk van Zonneveld (kistorgel)
The underlying text of this chorale prelude is the Song of Simeon. "I have suffered and struggled, but now my life is complete and I can die with peace of mind," exclaimed the very elderly Simeon when he met the child Jesus and his parents in the temple in Jerusalem. Bach aptly gave musical shape to Simeon's desire to go up to the hereafter with the recurring upward motifs in the right hand of the organ part
Klaglied, BuxWV 76b
Dives Sonis
With Klaglied, Dietrich Buxtehude composed an emotional in memoriam for his deceased father. His father Hans Jensen was, just like his son Dietrich, a gifted organist. This is echoed in the text written by Dietrich Buxtehude himself: "I, dear son, now deeply saddened / Write on the hell of your grave: / Here lie the gifts of playing / that have pleased God Himself."

Distressing is the story of Pergolesi, who died young. On his deathbed, only 26 years old, he wrote his masterful 'Stabat Mater'
