"Concierto de Aranjuez
The 'Adagio' from Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo is perhaps the most famous guitar work of all time. The melancholic theme of the blind Spanish composer touches you. After the first few notes of the sensitive melody you immediately imagine yourself in the warm Spain. Around this world-famous piece Izhar Elias and Fernando Cordas play a temperamental programme full of picturesque and warm-blooded pieces.
Beethoven and Schubert
In the first half of the concert, Izhar and Fernando will take you to Beethoven's Vienna. In 2020, it will be exactly 250 years since Beethoven was born. That is why the stage is filled with guitars from the time of Beethoven and Schubert. Even though Beethoven and Schubert themselves hardly wrote any music for the guitar, their pieces were played on guitar. Izhar and Fernando like to show how that sounded with guitar versions written by Beethoven's contemporaries. Fernando himself also contributes to the guitar adaptation of Schubert's Piano Sonata no. 13, D 664.
Izhar Elias
You may know Izhar Elias from the King's Day Concert 2016 when he was shown live on television with Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Izhar Elias is one of the most versatile Dutch guitarists. Just as easily he takes you to the world of early music with his baroque guitar and then with the modern guitar he brings the sweltering Spain to life. What he finds so attractive about the guitar? "It's such a sensitive instrument, the sound touched me instantly. Moreover, the instrument is flexible in all kinds of styles. Just like the piano, you can play the melody and the accompaniment at the same time, it is also a very rhythmic instrument. You can hear all those characteristics in this duo show with Fernando Cordas.
Fernando Cordas
In 2010 Fernando Cordas made his definitive breakthrough when he replaced the world famous guitarist Pepe Romero in a performance of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Since then he plays with all the major orchestras. Fernando Cordas also enthusiastically researches the history of the guitar in the nineteenth century. Since September 2014 Cordas has been a teacher at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
