Viola player Xandi van Dijk talks about Ivy Priaulx Rainier's First String Quartet: "The music here and there resembles Bartók a bit, because Priaulx Rainier has gone into the folk music of South Africa You shouldn't think of folk songs you could sing like that. Xandi: "It's all about the rhythmic feel of the South African folk music you hear in this string quartet"
PAUZE
Strijkkwartet nr. 14 in d, D 810, 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'
Signum Quartet
  • I. Allegro
  • II. Andante con moto
  • III. Scherzo. Allegro molto
  • VI. Presto
Death seems to be everywhere in Schubert's Fourteenth String Quartet. Schubert based the variations in the slow movement on his song 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'. The 'Scherzo' is a kind of death or witch dance. Also in the last part, an almost demonic tarantella, the drama drips from the notes.

Schubert's Der Tod und das Mädchen is without doubt the best-known string quartet ever composed. What makes this piece so special? And why do listeners want to hear it over and over again? Maybe because it's about the essence of existence. Life and death are circling around each other in the Tod and the Mädchen. For Schubert's masterpiece, there is hardly a better interpreter imaginable than the sublime Signum Quartet. This German ensemble is a specialist when it comes to Schubert. "The quartet plays transparently and animated," says Gramophone. "A top ensemble that provides heartwarming interpretations", writes OpusKlassiek.
