Roman Rabinovich - Debussy, Satie, Gershwin - World pianists

Suite in g, op. 1, nr. 18
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
  • I. Preludio
  • II. Corrente
  • III. Sarabanda
  • IV. Giga
With this Suite in g by Domenico Zipoli we make the step to Spain. Zipoli wrote the piece when he was just an organist at the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome. At that time, a musical career was no longer enough for Zipoli. In 1716, he left for the Spanish city of Seville to cross the ocean to Argentina as a missionary
Estampes
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
  • I. Pagodes
  • II. La soirée dans Grenade
  • III. Jardins sous la pluie
The title Estampes stems from the visual arts and refers to the technique of engraving. What Debussy presents his listeners with here are three images that are captured in music with an exotic touch: Javanese temples ('Pagodas'), a Spanish evening in Granada ('La soirée dans Grenade') and Normandy gardens in the rain ('Jardins sous la pluie').
Gnossienne nr. 1
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
Erik Satie had a penchant for bizarre titles. For example, in his oeuvre you will find 'Pieces in the shape of a pear' or 'Dried embryos'. However, the exact origin of the title 'Gnossienne' is unclear. What the pieces have in common is that they have a slow tempo, the most important characteristic of which is the lack of bars and stripes
Capriccio, 'Clown on a Bicycle'
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
Pianist Roman Rabinovich also appears as a composer with his humorous piano piece Capriccio: 'Clown on a bicycle'. He talks about it himself: "As the title suggests, the music explores elements of endearing clumsiness"
3 Preludes
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
  • I. Allegro ben ritmato e deciso
  • II. Andante con moto e poco rubato
  • III. Allegro ben ritmato e deciso
Are jazz and classical together? Gershwin thought so. In fact, in his pieces he wanted to merge classical and jazz. In his 3 Preludes Gershwin brought together music by Chopin, jazz, blues and even a bit of Latin and that results in swinging music!
PAUZE
uit: Goyescas
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
  • IV. Quejas, o La Maja y el ruiseñor
  • III. El fandango de candil
  • V. El Amor y la muerte
Painting in music was not reserved for Debussy alone. In the six Goyescas piano pieces Granados was inspired by paintings by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). Granados was so impressed that he later even made an opera about De Goya, also titled Goyescas. Granados incorporated music from these piano pieces.
3 Mouvements de Pétrouchka
Roman Rabinovich (piano)
  • I. Danse russe
  • II. Chez Pétrouchka
  • III. La semaine grasse
Stravinsky composed very little music for the piano. But these 3 Mouvements de Pétrouchka are a welcome exception. Stravinsky wrote the work for his friend, pianist Arthur Rubinstein. In order to arouse Rubinstein's interest, Stravinsky told us that the piece would be technically challenging, but musically satisfying. Rubinstein knew that. 3 Mouvements de Pétrouchka is still one of the most difficult piano pieces to play

Step into the musical world of the famous painter Pablo Picasso. World pianist Roman Rabinovich takes you straight to Spain with music by baroque composer Domenico Zipoli. You can see Picasso's painting 'The old guitarist' in front of you, while enjoying the piece Goyescas by Granados. With Satie's Gnossienne, Debussy's picturesque Estampes and pieces from Stravinsky's ballet Petrushka, you will experience a musical world that Pablo Picasso certainly knew.
