Maria Milstein and the Travelling Music Company - Schubert's beautiful String Quintet

Sonate voor twee violen in C, op. 56
Maria Milstein (viool) Mathieu van Bellen (viool)
  • I. Andante cantabile
  • II. Allegro
  • III. Commodo (quasi allegretto)
  • IV. Allegro con brio
Prokofiev did like a challenge. After listening to what he thought was a very mediocre piece for two violins, he thought he could do better. During a holiday in St. Tropez he wrote down his sonata. It became a playful work in four short parts. This has made it one of the most successful pieces written for this combination of instruments.
Strijkkwintet in C, D 956
Reizend Muziekgezelschap Mathieu van Bellen (viool) Maria Milstein (viool)
  • I. Allegro ma non troppo
  • II. Adagio
  • III. Scherzo. Presto – Trio. Andante sostenuto
  • VI. Allegretto
For his only string quintet, Schubert was inspired by the string quintets of Mozart and Beethoven. But in length and emotional depth, Schubert surpasses his famous predecessors. Schubert's String Quintet is still one of his most beloved chamber music pieces. The melancholy slow movement became world famous: you may know the music from the popular detective Inspector Morse and from Desmond Morris' BBC series The Human Animal.

"Her tone sounds like melancholy, profoundness, vulnerability," writes de Volkskrant about violinist Maria Milstein. It is precisely these qualities that you need as a string player for Schubert's String Quintet, his last great chamber music piece of almost extraterrestrial beauty. Especially the melancholic, slow part is impressive. Maybe you know about the popular detective Inspector Morse. Maria Milstein and the Travelling Music Company also play beautiful Russian chamber music by Arensky and Prokofiev.
