Severin von Eckardstein

Winning an important competition is one thing, but to remain relevant as a pianist afterwards is another. Master pianist Severin von Eckardstein can talk about it. In 2003 he won the Queen Elisabeth Competition. That was an achievement in itself, but also in the years that followed Severin turned out to be a versatile pianist of stature. In the Netherlands alone, Severin is a welcome guest in, for example, the series Masterpianists in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. In the Edesche Concert Hall he will take you on a personal tour of his musical preferences. And you bet he's surprised by that.

The afternoon of Debussy

It is perhaps the most famous whistle solo in music history, the beginning of Debussy's Prélude à l'aprés-midi d'un faune. The sultry melody immediately brings you into the atmosphere of a sultry summer afternoon. Debussy wrote the piece as an orchestral work, inspired by a poem by the French poet Mallarmé. What's that poem about? Debussy wrote about it himself: "Tired of chasing anxiously fleeing nymphs, the faun finally surrenders to an intoxicating sleep, in which his dreams finally come true" Severin von Eckardstein shows how colourful Debussy's most famous orchestral work on the Bösendorfer Imperial sounds.

Severin von Eckardstein about what he wants to achieve at a concert:
"I hope to touch the audience with my journey through music. That, when I play, I tell people my story, especially during the more personal and intimate moments of a particular piece. I want to take people through breathtaking musical landscapes; maybe bring back forgotten experiences."

Duponts House in the dunes

The music of Gabriel Dupont rarely sounds on the concert stage. Wrongly, Severin von Eckardstein thinks. He's so excited about it that he likes to take you to the musical world of Dupont. In Le maison dans les dunes, Dupont takes you on a trip along the coast. The titles could just be the captions in a photo book: 'On a clear morning in the dunes', 'Light play of the sun on the waves' and 'Sailing on the water'. There are so many atmospheres and so many impressions. "It takes a thoroughbred virtuoso like Von Eckardstein to let those lines blossom in all their subtle beauty", writes Biëlla Luttmer in de Volkskrant.

Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze

Schumann was madly in love with Clara Wieck when he composed his Davidsbündlertänze. According to his own words, he even incorporated "wedding thoughts" into it. But above all, the eighteen short pieces are a succession of funny and tender moments. Exactly as it goes with falling in love: at times exuberant and optimistic, at other times thoughtful and full of desire. Schumann even devised an alter ego for both moods: Florestan and Eusebius, the initials of which he wrote above the pieces

Severin von Eckardstein plays music in the middle of winter for a languid afternoon. So you can experience the pieces by Debussy, Chopin and Schumann. Quite literally, this applies to Debussy's dreamy Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. The piece La maison dans les dunes by Gabriel Dupont sounds just as languid. Here you can hear the musical repercussions of the trips the composer made through the dunes. Dupont's music rarely sounds on the concert stage. That's why artist in residence Severin von Eckardstein is pleased to introduce you to these picturesque pieces. "Pure poetry from the keys."
