Wiener Kammersymphonie and Paolo Giacometti (piano) - Mozart's Overture 'Die Zauberflöte' and Piano Concerto no. 13

Ouverture, 'Die Zauberflöte'
Wiener Kammersymphonie
With this 'Overture' (literally means 'opening') Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte begins. It is one of the most enigmatic operas in history, because it is still unclear what exactly the story is about. Most likely a secret initiation ritual of Freemasonry would be the starting point. The 'Overture' is full of symbolism. Take, for example, the number three. The 'Overture' begins with a knocking motif of three chords. Those three chords return in the middle of the piece and also at the very end

  • III. Allegro
Mozart wrote his Thirteenth Piano Concerto at the height of his fame in Vienna. In order to increase the popularity of his music, Mozart composed a number of piano concerts in such a way that they could not only be performed with orchestra (as Mozart did during his own concerts), but also with a handful of strings. This way fans could play these pieces at home with friends.

Mahler's Fourth Symphony has been called the most classical of his ten symphonies. The airy opening melody could have been conceived by Mozart or Haydn. Yet nothing is what it seems, because in spite of all the light-footedness, dark forces seem to be at work under the skin, which occasionally give the music a grim character.

Like Mozart, Erich Korngold was a child prodigy. When he was twelve he composed Märchenbilder. This is a collection of piano pieces based on fairy tales, including 'The Princess on the Pea'. The music follows the story globally and focuses mainly on the oversensitive princess. In the middle of the piece the music seems to stick, as if the princess can't sleep. Of course, it was the pea under her fourteen mattresses. Then the music relaxes and the princess can continue to sleep peacefully

With Mozart's world-famous overture Die Zauberflöte and a section from Mahler's Fourth Symphony, you will hear the most beautiful music Vienna has produced. Pianist Paolo Giacometti puts himself in Mozart's shoes and plays his carefree Thirteenth Piano Concerto at the Bösendorfer Imperial. After the break, the Vienna Chamber Symphony with Korngold's Märchenbilder dives into the fairytale world of the Brothers Grimm
