Lachrimae Antiquae
Seldom Sene
If you can speak of 'top hits' during the Renaissance, then Dowlands Lachrimae Antiquae is definitely one of them. Dowland wrote the piece in 1596. Later he made it into a song for lute and voice with the title Flow, my tears. It is said that Dowland became so familiar with it that he incorporated the title into his signature: "Jo. Dolandi de Lachrimae" (John Dowland of Lachrimae) . Numerous composers took to the stage with Dowlands Lachrimae. Including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, who wrote a series of variations on Dowland's famous Pavane

In Nomine, 'Seldom Sene'
Seldom Sene
One of the best-known genres in sixteenth-century English music is the so-called 'In Nomine'. The title comes from a popular excerpt on this text from a mass by the composer John Tavener. Christopher Tye wrote no less than 24 In Nomines about this excerpt. About Tye's In Nomine 'Seldom Sene' Volkskrant reviewer Frits van der Waa remarked: "A two-minute piece that starts everyday, but takes off unexpectedly shortly before the end. Rarely seen, indeed."

Fantasia upon one note
Seldom Sene
This fantasy of Henry Purcell owes its nickname to the tenor part (the second lowest flute) which only plays one note throughout the piece. Even if at the end the musical movement accelerates, the tenor plays stoically. According to tradition, Purcell had a friend who wanted to play along, but was totally incompetent. Purcell decided to write a piece in which his friend could still participate. As 'monotonous' as this tenor voice sounds, the other four parties are as agile and expressive
