There are those melodies that composers keep haunting. The theme of Beethoven's Eroica-Variationen was one of those. We first encounter it as a kind of folk dance. Later it appears in Beethoven's ballet Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus. But what most people can recognise the melody of is the 'Finale' of Beethoven's Third Symphony with the nickname 'Eroïca'. Although Beethoven composed his Eroica-Variations much earlier, they owe their nickname to that symphony
Pianosonate nr. 4, op. 29
Sophiko Simsive (piano)
  • I. Allegro molto sostenuto
  • II. Andante assai
  • III. Allegro con brio, ma non leggiero
Prokofiev was far from consistent when it comes to the inspiration for his Fourth Piano Sonata. In his diary the composer claims to base himself on a rejected symphony, but in his autobiography Prokofiev claims that the material for this work comes from an earlier piano sonata. Perhaps the sombre content of the piece has most to do with his childhood friend Maximilian Schmidthof, to whom Prokofiev dedicated his sonata. The tragic suicide of this Maximilian made a deep impression on the composer.
PAUZE
Pianosonate nr. 2, op. 61
Sophiko Simsive (piano)
  • I. Allegretto
  • II. Largo
  • III. Moderato
Shostakovich composed his Second Piano Sonata during the Second World War, as did his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. But as expressive as these orchestral works are, the piano sonata is so introverted. Shostakovich's Second Piano Sonata is so impressive because of its detached and detached atmosphere. "As if you're looking at an orphaned landscape where war has been," Sophiko Simsive says about it himself
Pianosonate nr. 5, op. 53
Sophiko Simsive (piano)
Skrjabin's Fifth Piano Sonata, on. 53 came into being at the same time as his famous orchestral work Poème d'ecstasy. Musically, there are many connections between the two pieces. This is how Skrjabin initially wanted to call his sonata 'Poème', because as a motto he gave the work a poem: 'I call you to life, oh mysterious forces / Drowned in the dark depths / of the creative spirit, timid / shadows of life, I bring you audacity'

Sophiko Simsive lets her Georgian heart speak at the Bösendorfer Imperial of the Edesche Concert Hall. Music by great Russians like Prokofiev, Skryabin and Shostakovich appeals to her. Especially with Shostakovich's 'Second Piano Sonata' Sophiko has a special bond. "When I played the piece for the first time, I noticed how intensely personal this music is," she says. Let yourself be touched by the beautiful playing of Sophiko Simsive, without a doubt one of the most important pianists of her generation.
