"Sweet memories
Experience music as a sweet reminder of bygone times. Flute flute player Hester Groenleer and organist Matthias Havinga take you to the musical treasures of the Middle Ages and masterpieces by Bach and Mendelssohn come to life. Just as surprising as the combination of recorder with organ and harmonium is the content of the programme. But the music always remains accessible and varied. In addition to Hester Groenleer, Matthias Havinga can also be heard as a soloist, including in Mendelssohn's famous 'Sixth Organ Sonata'.
Mendelssohn's most famous organ sonata
The six organ sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy are considered the absolute highlight of the organ repertoire in the period between Bach and Liszt. Mendelssohn, himself an excellent organist, composed them at the request of an English publisher. The project revolved around six sonatas, each with its own character. Matthias Havinga plays the best-known of these, the 'Sixth Organ Sonata', with a series of variations on the well-known song 'Vater unser im Himmelreich'
Hester Green Leather
Hester Groenleer is one of the most famous recorder players of this moment. She is a prominent member of recorder quintet Seldom Sene. Together with organist Matthias Havinga she can also be heard as a soloist on a regular basis. She talks about her collaboration with Matthias: "Together with him I try to discover the possibilities that arise from the combination of different recorders and keyboard instruments, such as organ, harpsichord and piano. In doing so, we ignore the well-trodden paths where the keyboard instrument often fulfils an accompanying function and seek out the limits of what is possible. The different style periods are presented in an appropriate and surprising way within one concert"
Matthias Havinga about Hester Groenleer:
"She can play a seemingly simple melody in such a tactile way that it gets to you. That also influenced my organ playing. We talk a lot about interpretation, how we want it to sound. We always have a lot of influence on each other."
