Mozart - Clarinet Quintet, KV 581 Schumann - Fantasiestücke, on. 73 (arr.) Keuris - Clarinet Quintet
Mozart's Clarinet Quintet
"Really, your instrument has such a soft and beautiful tone that no one with a heart can resist it." Mozart wrote these words to clarinettist and friend Anton Stadler. Clearly, Mozart was lyrical about the clarinet. No wonder he wrote some of his finest pieces especially for this instrument. Anyone who knows Mozart's famous 'Clarinet Concerto' will recognise a lot in this 'Clarinet Quintet'. Actually it looks a bit like a mini clarinet concert, in which the clarinet and the string quartet enter into a dialogue with each other.
Schumann's fantasy world
Also Robert Schumann's 'Fantasiestücke', op. 73 are a real 'top hit' in chamber music for clarinet. These pieces are romantic music in the purest sense of the word, because Schumann allowed himself to be guided by his unlimited imagination. Hence the many sudden mood changes, which resemble a roller coaster of different moods. Arno Piters and Consorten play the version Geert van Keulen made of this piece for clarinet and string quartet.
Arno Piters: "I was studying to crush, because you want that recognition anyway."
Within the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra there is also plenty of room for chamber music. "That's important, especially for the strings. Unlike in the orchestra, they are all on their own; every scratch, every mistake you hear. Chamber music benefits the ensemble playing of the whole orchestra, because you have to pay close attention to what's going on around you. And then it doesn't really matter who you play with, because everyone plays the stars of the sky. That's why I think it's so great to do the program together with the beautiful quintets of Mozart and Keuris"!

Arno Piters and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
As a fourteen-year-old, Arno Piters could only dream of it: playing the clarinet in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. But that dream came true, because barely ten years later he ended up in this world-famous orchestra. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra belongs to the absolute world top. Not only do the musicians excel in the great symphonic masterpieces, they are also great lovers of chamber music. Five soloists from the KCO celebrate their love for Mozart's beautiful 'Clarinet Quintet' in the Edesche Concert Hall. Chamber music of the highest level!
In the second half of the eighteenth century the clarinet was a relatively new instrument. Mozart, who was always interested in new inventions, not only included the instrument in his orchestral works, but also wrote a number of beautiful solo pieces for clarinet.
